Berger wins overall biathlon world cup - henkel twelfth

"I don’t think anyone has ever been as dominant in the biathlon as she has been this year," said andrea henkel after the norwegian’s third success at holmenkollen. The 35-year-old from thuringia was once again the best german in the mass start in twelfth place, but missed out on a possible podium finish in the final push.

Berger was once again the mab of all things in their home country. The norwegian won the 12.5 kilometer race ahead of anastasiya kuzmina from slovakia and mass start world champion darja domratcheva from belarus, celebrating her eleventh victory of the season.

In the german camp, on the other hand, there was anger and disenchantment. "We are not able to switch off our head at the sliding stand, to concentrate on the technique, to bring in the dash of cheekiness, a bit of coolness there," said women’s national coach gerald honig about the unsatisfactory performances.

Miriam gossner had to pay tribute to her strenuous cross-country adventure in val di fiemme. "The last few days have been quite exhausting. It was now four races in five days, with the exhausting journey in between," said the three-time season winner after five penalty laps and 19th place. For nadine horchler and franziska hildebrand the places 21 and 26 remained. Olympic cross-country skiing champion evi sachenbacher-stehle did not even qualify for the mass start.

Laura dahlmeier on the other hand did. The 19-year-old, a three-time junior world champion, finished 27th after placing seventh and tenth in the sprint and pursuit at the top 30 final in oslo. "I don’t want to overestimate this," said honig in view of the many new impressions that had been made on dahlmeier. "She can become a saule of this team."

And still dahlmeier cannot get out of his amazement. "When you sit there at dinner and say: that’s martin fourcade or tora berger – that’s really something special. And I can fully enjoy this now. I’m very happy to be part of it."

Now the biathletes are off to the olympic test in sochi. With vanessa hinz from schliersee, another young skijager will be part of the german team at the last two world cups in the olympic city and then in chanty-mansiysk. "We have recognized the signs of the times. We are trying to form a powerful team. Thank god we still have twelve months to go," said honig. At the moment only andrea henkel and miriam gossner are set for the olympic team. We still have to do a lot of pushing with miri," she says."
